Global insurtech company bolttech has expanded its footprint in Africa, announcing the acquisition of Kenyan digital insurance platform mTek. The deal, finalized on December 3, 2025, strengthens bolttech’s strategic position in East Africa and integrates mTek’s capabilities into the Group’s growing global embedded insurance ecosystem.
The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 2019, Nairobi-based mTek operates a fully digital platform that allows Kenyan customers to seamlessly compare, purchase, and manage various insurance products. The platform has been positioned as a tool for financial inclusion, offering simple, paperless insurance experiences in a market with low penetration rates. It currently partners with major regional insurers, including GA Insurance, Sanlam, and Britam, and recently collaborated with Mastercard to develop embedded insurance solutions across East Africa.
The acquisition is expected to leverage mTek’s local market insights and technology expertise on a global scale, complementing bolttech’s international insurance and protection framework.
Stephan Tan, CEO, EMEA at bolttech, highlighted the strategic rationale for the deal. “This represents an exciting step forward for bolttech as we expand our footprint in Africa,” Tan said in a statement. “mTek’s innovative platform and talented team share our vision of using technology to make protection more accessible. Together, we can accelerate digital transformation in insurance and extend the reach of embedded protection across the region.”
mTek’s existing leadership, including CEO Bente Krogmann, will continue to manage East African operations, ensuring continuity for customers, partners, and employees during the integration.
“Joining the bolttech family marks an exciting next chapter for mTek,” Krogmann commented. “Our technology, local insight, and commitment to inclusive insurance have transformed how customers access protection in Kenya, and this partnership allows us to scale that impact even further.”
mTek, which empowers over 350,000 customers in Kenya and offers quotes from more than 45 insurers, will undergo a rebranding process in due course as it integrates with bolttech’s global operations. The move is a strong indicator of rising investor interest in Africa’s burgeoning insurtech sector, which promises to digitize traditionally paper-heavy markets and improve insurance access.
