Airtel Money Africa has expanded its partnership with pawaPay, Africa’s largest mobile money payment service provider, to make it easier for people to send money across borders.

The move will help licensed International Money Transfer Operators send funds directly to Airtel Money wallets in seven African countries.

The new arrangement will cover Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville and Tanzania. More than 161 million Airtel Money customers in these countries will now be able to receive international remittances instantly through their mobile wallets.

The two companies have worked together for over five years in domestic mobile money services. This latest development takes the partnership to the international stage, using pawaPay’s payment infrastructure, which handles over four million transactions every day and boasts a 99.9 per cent uptime.

Airtel Money Africa CEO Ian Ferrao said the partnership is an important step in making money transfers more accessible and secure.

“We are pleased to expand our work with pawaPay to enhance international remittances across Africa. Their proven reliability and dedication to African consumers make them an ideal partner. This integration will allow International Money Transfer Operators to connect with Airtel Money’s growing reach, enabling real-time payments that support financial inclusion and economic growth,” he said.

pawaPay CEO Nikolai Barnwell said the company is focused on simplifying payments for businesses in Africa.

“Remittances play a big role in people’s lives. By working more closely with Airtel Money, we can give money transfer operators the tools to deliver seamless cross-border payments,” he explained.

Remittances are a vital lifeline for millions of Africans, helping families, businesses, and communities thrive. This partnership promises fast, secure and direct wallet-to-wallet payments, which are key to building Africa’s digital economy.

pawaPay has also announced plans to expand the service to more Airtel Money markets shortly.
