Former Nation Editor Dies in Road Accident

Former Nation Media Group (NMG) Editor Dan Otieno is dead.

Otieno died in a road accident, after being hit by an unknown vehicle along Waiyaki Way as he crossed the road.

The crash took place at around 9 pm on Monday, November 9. The driver of the vehicle is said to have sped off leaving Otieno’s body lying on the road.

At the time of his death, Otieno was the Communications Officer for East African Portland Cement Company.

At Nation, he served in different capacities including as a reporter and chief of the media house’s Nyeri and Kisumu bureaus.

Details of the incident were confirmed by Kabete police boss Francis Wahome, who stated that investigations had been launched to find the missing driver.

“The body was taken to the City Mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the vehicle,” Wahome disclosed.

A worrying trend of journalists passing away in road accidents has been witnessed in the past two years.

In that period, at least four journalists affiliated with Nation Media Group (NMG) have died in road accidents.

In September 2019, former news editor Anthony Kariuki died in a road accident along Outer Ring Road in Nairobi. He was hit by a car as he crossed the road on his way to his Buru Buru home.

NTV Video Editor Raphael Nzioki died in March following a hit-and-run accident at the junction of Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street in Nairobi.

CCTV footage later saw the vehicle’s registration number traced by police to one Patrick Ngugi.

Later in March, a Sub-editor with The East African, Christine Omulando, died in an accident at the Khoja Mosque Roundabout.
