A homecoming is in the offing for Twiga Foods co-founder Peter Njonjo who leaves Coca Cola after 21 years of service to the beverage producer.

Njonjo has been appointed the chief executive of Twiga Foods, a firm he founded together with Grant Brooke in 2014.

“What started out as an idea has now become a vehicle through which we can contribute to the transformation of the food value chain,” the Twiga Foods CEO tweeted.

Njonjo exits his role as president of West and Central Africa business for Coca Cola. In joining the helm of Twiga Foods, he will move operations from Abuja, Nigeria to 9 Riverside Drive Nairobi.

The move also represents what outgoing CEO Brooke termed as a first; a manager from a Fortune 500 company joining a startup in Africa.

Brooke, who has until now been the CEO of the firm, will retain an executive role in the business, assisting in the expansion plans of the company.

Twiga Foods is a startup that uses technology to distribute fresh produce across counties in Kenya. In turn, it links farmers to food vendors. Small scale farmers are among the major beneficiaries of the company’s  mobile phone transactions service model.

A report by Founder 360 Magazine ranks the firm as one of the top funded tech startups in Kenya in 2018, with a funding amounting to Ksh1.7 billion.

Njonjo, 42,  has a vision to create “more efficient food markets in Africa and improved food security”, according to Business Daily.
