Police cyber unit to battle child sex abuse opened in Nairobi

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI)  George Kinoti on Monday opened a cyber centre at the Kenya Police’s anti-human trafficking protection unit that will help fight paedophiles, child traffickers and abusers.

Speaking during the launch, Mr Kinoti warned paedophiles who take advantage of vulnerable children and abuse them that their days are numbered.

“This cyber unit will enable us to arrest child abusers, and they will not see it coming. It will monitor any crime committed against children, report and act on it immediately,” said Mr Kinoti.

According to him, international paedophiles are moving to the remote areas pretending to be charities where they pry and commit unspeakable acts to innocent children.

British High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey vowed to help track foreigners who abuse children i the country.

“The centre will help the government to curb online child sex abuse that is affecting the rest of the world.We will also work with the Kenya police to ensure that foreign paedophiles targeting and abusing vulnerable children in the country are brought to justice,” said Mr Hailey.

Similar units are expected to be set up in Mombasa and Kisumu.

The specialist cyber centre, touted as the first of its kind across Africa will give security forces access to data on child abuse using information provided by technology firms.

This comes after American Couple running a children’s home in Bomet County are being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) on child abuse.

The two, Gregory Dow and his wife Mary Rose are accused of molesting children in their care at the children’s home in Boito.

Mr Dow is reported to have engaged in sexual relations with girls at the home. He is further accused by his ex-wife Janice Jenkins of abusing their daughter for more than 20 years.

His partner in crime Ms Mary Rose has been charged with implanting birth control devices to girls under her care. The two left the country in 2017 with arrest warrant issued against them.

Another paedophile Katuku Mutuku, a cook at Martyrs of Uganda Children’s Home was arrested and charged with sodomizing boys in the school located in Machakos County.

According to investigations, the cook is said to have sodomized eight other boys in the period of three years.

The county government ordered the closure of the children’s home which also had a primary school section.
