Facebook to hire 100 reviewers in content centre in Nairobi

Social Media platform Facebook is set to open its first content review centre in sub Saharan Africa in Nairobi.

About 100 reviewers who will be expected to support languages in Somali, Oromo, Hausa and Swahili will be hired by the end of 2019.

In partnership with Samasource the largest digital employer in East Africa, the platform has stated that the move is part of their commitment to ensure safety and security on Facebook and its investment in Africa.

Facebook Public Policy Director in Africa Ebele Okobi said they are excited in their partnership with Samasource that has made it possible to open the first content review centre in the content.

“This highlights our commitment to serving the community of people using our platforms across Africa, as well as our commitment to continuing to invest and partner locally across the continent,” said Okobi.

According to Fazdai Madzingira the Public Policy Associate for Content, Facebook is a platform where people can express themselves and freely discuss different opinions while ensuring that it remains safe for everyone.

“Over the years, we have made significant investments globally and locally in ensuring that people see the content they want to see and are aware of what is and isn’t allowed on the platform,” said Madzingira.

“We have a set of community standards and we published more detailed internal guidelines around this rules last year,” added Madzingira.

Samasource Program Director Carolyn Komen has said, “we’re excited to partner with Facebook in Nairobi to help keep people on Facebook safe and continue our mission. Our team will receive extensive training and support, benefit from industry-leading facilities, and have the opportunity to advance their careers in tech through this partnership.”
