Alarmed by the high number of unregistered vehicles in the country,The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a crackdown as it steps up attempts to weed out vehicles violating various sections of the Traffic Act.

In a statement released on Friday, the authority says that it is concerned by an influx of unregistered public vehicles including foreign registered vehicles which do not have the requisite documentation from Kenyan regulatory agencies.

“NTSA has noted with concern the existence and use of unregistered vehicles. The vehicles bear the number plates inscribed as X-GK, X-KA, X Diplomat. We wish to clarify that vehicles bearing this number plates are unregistered and are therefore operating illegally,” read the statement.

To that effect, the authority wants owners of the vehicles to ensure that they are duly registered before they hit Kenyan roads.

Further, the authority advised owners of foreign registered vehicles to ensure that they have all the necessary documentation before bringing the vehicles to the country.

NTSA’s warning echoes a similar one by The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) which also raised the alarm over the issue.

On May, KRA seized 21 unregistered vehicles valued at Sh.30 million in Mombasa.

Most of the cars bore Tanzanian and Ugandan number plates.
