Six individuals – reportedly linked to France’s far right – were arrested on November 6 over a suspected attempt of a “violent” plot against the European country’s president, Emmanuel Macron.
AFP reported that officials confirmed the arrest of the six who were not identified. They were picked up by anti-terrorism units in the eastern French regions of Moselle and Isère and the north-west region of Ille-et-Vilaine.
Media agencies also said that authorities had been alerted as to a possible attack on President Macron, and that investigations were ongoing into a potential criminal terrorist association.
The reports come over a year after a man was charged with plotting to assasinate President Macron.
Ironically, they also come a day after United Kingdom usually celebrates Guy Fawkes Day in rememberance of the attempted treasonous plot against the House of Lords and the British monarchy that was foiled on November 5, 1605.
France’s president is due to host US President Donald Trump later this week.
President Macron was in Verdun as part of World War commemorations. French newspaper Le Monde reported on Tuesday that he was queried by residents of the area over rising fuel prices and that he had to defend his policies.
“Fuel is not a fuss,” the French newspaper quoted President Macron, and referred to an interview where he had indicated that the price of fuel in France would not be reduced as “the government is not wrong, it is going in the right direction”.
