Safaricom Plc and Equity Bank are among two Kenyan companies competing with 534 other East African companies for honours during this year’s 8th edition of the East African CIO100 Awards.

The regional CIO100 Awards celebrate companies from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania for innovative use of IT.

During the 2017 CIO100 Awards, The National Transport & Safety Authority (NTSA) bagged two of the most coveted awards including the overall winner and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the year which was won by the authority’s Head of ICT Fernando Wangila.

This year, MultiChoice Kenya, NIC Bank Kenya, Stanbic Bank Uganda, National Women District Rwanda and The Rwanda Information Society Association (RISA) are battling to make the final 100 companies list and win awards.

Ugandan companies/organisations in the running include Maxwellian International Limited, The Health Service Commission, Ziamond Techies as well as Orphaned & Vulnerable Children Limited.

Serensic Africa and Agronet Farms Limited are among Tanzanian companies that are in the fray for awards.

According to the CIO100 technical team, the process of finding the winner began in June when the 536 companies were selected with the scouting ending on September 30.

The 536 companies will then first be narrowed down to 200 before the technical team announces the 100 companies that will have made it to the final list.

The top CIO100 companies will be announced during the annual East Africa CIO100 Symposium and Awards that will be held from November 28 to 30 November 30 in Naivasha.

“With entries coming to an end, 536 East Africa companies participated for the analysis as 200 companies make it for final screening of the 2018 CIO100 Awards,” reads a statement to newsrooms by CIO East Africa CEO Laura Chite.

Lifting the lid on the process behind selecting the final 100 companies, Ms. Chite said that the technical team interrogated the companies’ relationship between what it terms as two key aspects; business processes and results.

“Organisations are assessed on their ability to not only deliver results today but to as well build on a sustainable culture of continuous improvement,” said Ms. Chite.

The CIO100 Awards event is expected to bring together more than 1,000 CIOs and IT experts from all over the world and East African countries.

The awards ceremony is an offshoot of the global CIO100 Awards which have been held for over two-and-half decades.

The awards are purposed to recognize and celebrate 100 companies that demonstrate excellence and achievement in IT across the globe.
