Necessity has always been the mother of invention, but some discoveries are just acts of pure genius.

Brian Lukano, 29, a Nairobi resident from Dagoretti has excited Kenyans with his creative ability of converting used cooking oil to diesel!

And believe it or not, Lukano has used his product to fuel his car for nine months now. He owns Biogen Diesel Kenya Limited, a biodiesel production company in Kabiria, Dagoretti South which specializes in converting used cooking oil into the petroleum product called Zijani.

He sells one litre at Ksh85 to regular customers and at Ksh70 to owners of the hotels that provide him with the raw product.

Kenyans can relate to Lukano’s expertise especially now when fuel prices are through the roof after the introduction of the 16% VAT on fuel.

Lukano explains that the production process begins by scouring Nairobi for the raw product. He goes from hotel to hotel asking for used cooking oil which he then transports to his plant for processing.

The plant has two tanks, one for storage and the second one where the used oil is cleaned and mixed with regular diesel before becoming a finished product.

“We must mix it with regular diesel for it to power an engine fully. If we don’t do that, an engine will not be working at maximum potential,” said Lukano during an actuality interview with Citizen TV.

Lukano has been allowed to continue his illustrious work by regulatory bodies including the National Environment Management Agency and the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI).

Interestingly, airlines which Lukano did not name have also expressed interest in buying his product.
