A major international concert coming to Nairobi in October is giving Kenya’s creative industry another commercial platform, with Stanbic Bank Kenya backing the event as its title sponsor.

American R&B singer Ne-Yo will headline One Night Only: Brunch Edition with Ne-Yo at Ulinzi Sports Complex on October 20, 2026, with UK-based band Sol and the Gang also lined up to perform.

For the bank, however, the significance of the event extends beyond the appearance of an international music star.

Stanbic says its involvement is intended to support the network of businesses and professionals that operate behind major entertainment productions, from performers and producers to technical crews, suppliers, hospitality firms and small businesses.

The approach highlights the increasingly commercial nature of Kenya’s creative sector, where concerts and other cultural events create business opportunities across several industries.

“Bringing an artist of Ne-Yo’s calibre to Nairobi is an opportunity to pair a world-class experience with meaningful local economic impact,” said Michael Mutiga, Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Kenya and South Sudan.

“Our support goes beyond the performance itself: it helps create opportunities for the artists, producers, technical teams, vendors and small businesses that bring an event of this scale to life.”

Concert economy stretches beyond the stage

The financial impact of a major concert is rarely limited to ticket sales.

Putting thousands of people into an entertainment venue requires an extensive supply chain. Event organisers need sound and lighting companies, security personnel, transport services, caterers, accommodation providers, marketing teams and other suppliers.

Local musicians and creative professionals can also benefit from the production, while smaller businesses may gain from increased customer traffic around the event.

This wider economic footprint is particularly relevant in Kenya, where the creative economy contributes a notable share of economic activity.

A 2021 study by the World Intellectual Property Organisation and the Kenya Copyright Board estimated that copyright-based creative industries contributed 5.32 per cent of Kenya’s GDP and supported approximately 195,000 formal jobs.

The sector also includes a much larger informal workforce whose livelihoods depend on creative and cultural activities.

Lilian Onyach, Head of Brand and Marketing at Stanbic Bank Kenya, said the sponsorship was also intended to expose customers to international entertainment while giving the local creative sector a larger platform.

“Through this sponsorship, we are connecting our customers to world-class entertainment while creating a platform that celebrates the depth and commercial potential of Kenya’s creative industry,” she said.

The October 20 concert will fall on Mashujaa Day, a national holiday that could provide a significant audience for the event.

For Stanbic, the partnership also fits into a broader brand strategy that has seen banks increasingly use entertainment, sport and cultural events to engage customers.

The bank was named Overall Best Bank in Kenya at the Think Business Awards. Through Standard Bank, it was also ranked Africa’s Most Valuable Bank Brand by Brand Finance for the fifth consecutive year.

With Ne-Yo as the headline act, the event will put an international spotlight on Nairobi while placing local businesses and creative professionals at the centre of the production behind the music.
