Gen (Ret) Robert Kibochi, who rose from a signals officer to become Kenya’s 10th Chief of the Defence Forces, has published a memoir chronicling his 44-year military career and the evolving demands of modern command.

The book, Arrowhead, was launched Friday, Sept. 25, at an event attended by senior officers, retired service members, family and friends. Among those present were the current Chief of the Defence Forces, Gen. Charles Kahariri, and former Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo.

The occasion was presented not simply as the launch of a personal account, but as an opportunity to preserve institutional memory and record the experiences of officers who have shaped the Kenya Defence Forces.

Kibochi joined the Kenya Defence Forces in 1979 as a trade cadet in the Signals Corps. He advanced through successive command and staff roles, becoming the first officer from that branch to reach the rank of full general and lead the force. His trajectory coincided with the military’s growing emphasis on communications, technology and information capabilities.

Alongside his operational duties, Kibochi pursued advanced academic study, earning a doctorate in peace and conflict management. He was the first serving chief of the defence forces in Kenya to hold a Ph.D. He also served in multinational peace operations, including a deployment with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.

New book review

General Kahariri described Arrowhead as an important contribution to Kenya’s military history, urging serving and retired officers to document their experiences, decisions and lessons for future generations.

He said such accounts could help create what he called a lasting “vault of wisdom” from which future military leaders could draw.

Kibochi held the top uniformed post from May 2020 to May 2023. During that period he prioritized modernization, operational readiness, specialized military healthcare and enhanced training across the services.

In the memoir, the retired CDF likens military leadership to a relay race: each commander inherits an institution, advances it during their tenure, and hands it on stronger. He reflects on continuous learning, decision-making under pressure, measured speech and respect for differing perspectives—lessons he presents as relevant beyond the armed forces.

The metaphor reflects a central theme of Arrowhead: that leadership is temporary, while the institution and its accumulated experience must endure.

Kibochi also reflects on the value of continuous learning, careful decision-making, measured speech, constructive silence and respect for differing perspectives.

For former colleagues and officers who attended the launch, the event offered an opportunity to revisit a career that spanned major changes in Kenya’s military and security environment.

Through Arrowhead, Kibochi has turned 44 years of military experience into a written record of service, command and scholarship.
