Men Posing as Police Officers Rob Chinese Nationals of Ksh3.9M in Nyamira

A group of men posing as police officers stopped a vehicle carrying two Chinese nationals and their Kenyan driver before making off with Ksh 3.9 million in cash and other valuables in Nyamira County.

The incident was reported on Saturday, September 19, 2026, along the Nairobi-Keroka Road in the Mekenene area, according to police.

The victims were travelling in a blue BMW when a Toyota Probox decorated with flowers, similar to those used on vehicles heading to weddings, overtook them and forced the car to stop.

Two men stepped out of the Probox carrying devices that appeared to be police walkie-talkies. The victims told investigators that they believed the men were police officers, prompting the driver to pull over.

The suspects attacked the occupants by kicking them before taking Ksh 3.9 million in cash, a Huawei mobile phone valued at Ksh 50,000 and personal belongings worth about Ksh 200,000.

Confidential company documents, identification cards and other credentials were also taken during the robbery.

The attackers returned to their vehicle and sped away from the scene.

Police have launched investigations into the incident, with officers questioning the victims as they work to identify those responsible and recover the stolen property.

Investigators suspect the robbery may have been an inside job, although the circumstances surrounding the claim remain under investigation.

The incident comes amid concerns over gangs targeting people carrying large sums of money after visiting banks. Police investigations into similar robberies have established that some criminals monitor customers inside banking halls before following them to suitable locations where they carry out attacks.

Law enforcement agencies and banking institutions have been working on strategies to address the threat, with police pursuing groups linked to such robberies.

Investigations into the Nyamira case are ongoing as officers seek to establish whether the victims were followed before the attack and how the suspects obtained information about the money they were carrying.
