Elijah Lagat, the celebrated Kenyan athlete who claimed victory in the 2000 Boston Marathon and later served as a Member of Parliament, has died at the age of 59.
Lagat passed away while receiving treatment at Eldoret Hospital in Uasin Gishu County, though the precise cause has not been disclosed.
Emerging as one of the country’s most celebrated marathoners in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Lagat competed in numerous international races, showcasing the speed and endurance that made Kenya a dominant force in the sport.
After retiring from running, he turned to politics, serving as a two-term MP for Chesumei Constituency in Nandi County from 2007 to 2017.
Leaders have praised his commitment to inclusivity and his ability to connect with constituents through thoughtful dialogue and advocacy during his time as MP and after politics.
Nandi Governor Stephen Sang led tributes, calling Lagat a “national hero” whose contributions transcended sports and politics. “Hon. Lagat was a distinguished leader whose legacy will endure in the halls of Parliament and the hearts of those he served with humility,” Sang said in a statement.
On behalf of the county, the Governor extended condolences: “We mourn this great loss alongside his family, friends, and the people of Chesumei. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Lagat remained active in public life until his death, serving on the board of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), where he worked to address substance abuse issues in Kenya.
