Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, has reportedly removed a controversial post in which he alleged former US President Donald Trump was named in the Jeffrey Epstein files. The deletion follows a public dispute between the two prominent figures.

The exchange escalated after Mr. Musk criticised Mr. Trump’s proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which he claimed would add an estimated $2.4 trillion to the US deficit over the next decade.

In response to what he perceived as a threat from Mr. Trump regarding government subsidies for his company Tesla, Mr. Musk posted: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” This post, along with another stating “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out,” have since been deleted from his profile.

While it is known that Mr. Trump and the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were acquainted in the 1990s, Mr. Trump has consistently denied any involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities.

CNN’s Dana Bash has reported that Mr. Trump appears “resigned” rather than angry about Mr. Musk’s actions. She quoted Mr. Trump as saying, “‘I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem. The poor guy has got a problem.'” Ms. Bash added that Mr. Trump indicated he would not be speaking to Mr. Musk for a while but wished him well.

Mr. Musk, who has often championed “free speech,” previously concluded a stint last month with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
