The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) of the National Assembly has approved all seven nominees to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to JLAC Chairperson George Murugara, each nominee underwent a comprehensive vetting process and was deemed qualified to serve.

“Pursuant to the provisions of Article 252(b) of the Constitution, the committee approves the appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as Chairperson, and Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Arafat Abdallah as members of the IEBC,” Murugara stated.

The committee’s report will now proceed to the National Assembly for debate and a vote, which will determine the final approval and swearing-in of the commissioners.

President William Ruto put forward the nominations based on the recommendations of a Selection Panel chaired by Dr. Nelson Makanda. His picks included Erastus Edung Ethekon as Chairperson, and six commissioners: Ann Njeri Nderitu representing Nyandarua, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana from Kakamega, Mary Karen Sorobit of Uasin Gishu, Hassan Noor Hassan from Mandera, Francis Odhiambo Aduol of Kisumu, and Fahima Arafat Abdallah representing Lamu.

The IEBC has been operating without commissioners since January 2023, following the resignation of the previous team.

The all seven-member slate aims to fill critical vacancies in the body responsible for overseeing our country’s elections.
