Authorities in Nairobi have arrested a 30-year-old man and his two alleged accomplices, suspected of impersonating police officers in a sophisticated extortion racket in the city’s Eastlands area.

The three were apprehended in a meticulously planned operation targeting criminal activity in the Nyama Villa, Soweto, and Umoja Kwa Maji neighbourhoods, police confirmed on Monday.

The main suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of posing as a police officer to intimidate and extort money from unsuspecting members of the public. His two associates are believed to have played supporting roles in the scheme.

After the arrests, the primary suspect led detectives to his residence, where authorities recovered a cache of assorted police uniforms, forged identification documents, and other government-issued items.

The detectives from Njiru and Kayole are now probing the source of the uniforms, including whether active police officers may be complicit, and investigating potential links to a recent spate of robberies, muggings, and home invasions across Eastlands.

The recovered items, now secured as evidence, are expected to play a critical role in the investigation.

The three suspects, meanwhile, are in custody and will face charges, including impersonation, extortion, and possession of stolen government property, once inquiries are complete.
