Barely a year after Radio 47 joined the league of Big Five radio stations in Kenya, the management is planning a major overhaul that will give the station a facelift.

The management, according to inside sources, is planning to unveil new studios during the second anniversary celebrations.

Launched into the Kenyan airwaves two years ago, the station has grown to become a household name in the media industry, controlling at least 5.8 per cent of the market share, according to a recent study by Ipsos Synovate. The station ranks fifth in terms of market share, behind Citizen Radio (20.8 per cent), Kameme FM (7.5 per cent), Radio Jambo (7.2 per cent) and Ramogi FM (6.7 per cent).

In terms of reach, the station also ranks among the top five with 2.5 per cent behind Radio Citizen (10.4 per cent), Radio Jambo (4.3 per cent), Radio Maisha (2.7 per cent) and Kameme FM (2.7 per cent).

Considering the statistics, the Cape Media-owned station could be termed as one of the fastest radio stations in the country.

The radio station have overtaken other big names in the radio industry including Milele FM, Classic, Hope FM, Kiss 100, Capital FM and Gheto Radio.

The radio station was voted among the top 3 favorite radio stations nationally in its first year on air at the 2023 CA KUZA Awards.

In 2024, a survey by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) placed Radio 47 among the Top Five radio stations in Kenya for the first time.

The survey, which covers 2023, shows that the top four radio stations retained their spots in the ranking, with Radio Citizen gaining more viewers from 18 per cent in 2022 to 22 per cent in 2023.

Second-placed Radio Jambo saw its share drop from 16 per cent in 2022 to 14 per cent in 2023, while Radio Maisha dropped from 12 per cent to 11 per cent. Fourth-placed Milele FM dropped from eight per cent to six per cent.

On the other hand, the new entrant to the “Big Five” club, Radio 47, recorded a five per cent share in listenership despite launching in March 2023.

“Radio 47, a new entrant is up at 5 per cent. There is something they are doing right,” MCK CEO David Omwoyo said.
