HELB, the Higher Educàtion Loans Board, is the government body that provides affordable loans, bursaries and scholarships to Kenyans pursuing higher Educàtion at universities and various other institutes of higher learning in the country and within the East African Community (EAC).

HELB student loans, also called the Higher Educàtion Financing (HEF) loans, offer reliable funding distributed directly from the government to students and universities and TVET institutions accounts every given academic year as a significant source of finance for higher Educàtion and vocational and technical Educàtion.

Experts say HELB student loans offer more borrower protection compared with private loans because they are more flexible and equitable, especially when it comes to providing incentives for particular groups of students from low-income families who could not otherwise have afforded higher education.

How does HELB work to receiving money?

When one borrows a HELB loan, there are several steps they must go through before finally getting the funds: The first is the Registered stage, indicating that their documents have been received, then Verified to show they have been scrutinized and assessed and that the applicant has qualified for the loan award they had applied for, then Allocation stage to mean the fund is under disbursement before the Disbursed stage which is the second last phase before Paid to account.

Before the ‘disbursement in progress’ stage, one receives a batch number – HELB uses the batch code system to keep track of successful HELB applicants set to receive money for tuition and upkeep to keep track of all paid and pending accounts for efficiency.

Up to this day, there are several HELB batch numbers which have been paid as students are already in institutions continuing with their learning. Below are the batch numbers which have been paid so far:
