A photo shared online claiming to show floods in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, is misleading.

The photo was shared by X user Abuga Makori (@abuga_makori) alongside claims that someone had pocketed El Nino funds.

“Where are the boats which Johnson Sakaja bought? Nairobi is flooded yet someone pocketed El Nino money! Time to prepare for Babu Owino in 2027,” Makori captioned the photo.

An investigation by Business Today has found the information to be misleading.

A reverse image search on Google shows that the image was not taken in Nairobi but in Mombasa.

The photo was first published online by Nation on their Facebook page on November 3, 2023, credited to Winnie Atieno.

“Cars submerged, heavy traffic this morning on newly built Makupa Bridge in Mombasa after heavy rains,” Nation captioned the image.

A similar image was also published by several local media outlets, including Citizen Digital on November 5 and Kenyans.co.ke.

The photo purportedly showing floods in Nairobi is, therefore, misleading.

This fact check was published by Business Today with technical support from Code for Africa’s PesaCheck newsdesk, through the African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA).
