Kathryne Maundu got tongues wagging after it emerged that she had quit four lucrative jobs all at once! Apparently, the seasoned lawyer exited her company secretary role in four listed firms including, Safaricom.

Many social media users expressed disbelief at someone making such a move in Kenya’s struggling economy where finding a job is about as hard as spotting a genuine lawyer.

But Ms Maundu has explained why he left the four companies – Safaricom, East African Breweries Plc, BAT Kenya, and Eaagads Limited. For starters, she is an advocate of the High Court, a certified public secretary, and an accredited governance auditor with the Institute of Certified Secretaries of Kenya.

On Tuesday, East African Breweries Plc, BAT Kenya, and Eaagads Limited announced her exit effective October 23, rising eyebrows in business media and legal fraternity. She had earlier resigned from Safaricom on 30th September 30. There is speculation that she may have landed a lucrative government job that required her to relinquish her current positions.

But Ms Maundu said serving the four firms had robbed away her personal time. “I want to be significant to society and add value in a different way,” she said in an interview with Business Daily.

She said she could not do this when she is spending more time on service delivery for these companies. “It is a new season and I am also thinking about my wellness and the next steps in terms of family, friends, and hobbies,” she said.

She joined the BAT board as a company secretary in June 2020, EABL in March 2020, and Safaricom in February 2016. She has been on Eaagad’s board since 2019.

The companies said she demonstrated professionalism, competence, dedication, diplomacy, and tact. Ms Maundu said she also wants to focus on one industry and delve more into mentoring those who are getting into the secretarial profession.

In her capacity as a partner at Stamford Corporate Services LLP, which is part of Bowmans Coulson Harney LLP, Ms Maundu has also managed to serve more than 250 companies as an outsourced company secretary over the past 17 years.
