Kenya Airways pilot Ruth Karauri is the latest star of the new global Youtube phenomenon that is Big Jet TV. Her skills as she steered a flight to London alongside First Officer, Ayoob Harunany have caught the attention of Kenyans and aviation fans around the world.

Big Jet TV is a channel featuring enthusiastic plane-spotting commentary from airports around Europe. In recent days, it has been attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers as pilots battled 120mph ‘Storm Eunice’ winds to land their planes safely on Heathrow’s south runway in West London.

Video of Karauri expertly bringing the plane down despite strong winds in the area on February 19 quickly went viral.

“The flight conditions were strong gusting winds and it was quite a bumpy ride. However, thanks to the training we have had at Kenya Airways, particularly in the simulator, it prepared us for such a scenario. We used all our training expertise and skills that we have managed to learn over the years at Kenya Airways and we handled the landing expertly. It was a pleasure flying all our amazing passengers into London Heathrow yesterday,” she stated.

She has been hailed by, among many others, Irene Koki Mutungi, a KQ icon who made history as Africa’s first woman to Captain a Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ aircraft.

“So Proud!!! Ruth Karauri handled it like the ladies do #girlsfly,” Koki shared.

Not left out in congratulating Ruth was her husband, Ronald Karauri. The SportPesa CEO and Kasarani MP aspirant in the 2022 elections is a former Kenya Airways pilot himself.

“2nd best pilot in Kenya,” he tweeted along with a winking emoji as he cheekily reacted to his wife’s exploits.

Big Jet TV is ran by Jerry Dyer, an aviation enthusiast who cheers on the pilots from the sidelines while documenting their moves. Many of his reactions, such as “Here Comes the Russians!” to an Aeroflot plane, have gone viral.

According to Dyer, “all pilots deserve medals.”
