22-year old Eli Kipruto Rotich is Ksh200 million richer (before tax of course) after winning the Betika mega jackpot. Rotich correctly predicted the outcomes of 17 matches.

According to Betika, Rotich staked only Ksh49. He was unveiled as the jackpot winner at a colourful ceremony hosted by Betika at a city hotel on Friday, December 16th.

He joins the short list of Kenyans who secured hundreds of millions after winning various jackpots. Among them is Samuel Abisai, who famously won SportPesa’s Ksh221 million jackpot five years ago, from a Ksh200 stake.

Kenya remains one of the biggest bettíng markets in Africa, with several companies competing for a share of the multi-billion shilling pie. According to a 2019 GeoPoll study, 57% of Kenyans above the age of 18 have participated in gamblíng, including 69% of males and 44% of females. 47% are considered light gamblers as they place bets once a month or less, while only 10% of gamblers place bets more than once a day.

Other recent Kenyan bettíng millionaires include Ronald Omare, a football fanatic and Garissa-based handcart pusher who in January won a Ksh20 million jackpot on the Odibets platform. Omare disclosed that he planned on using the funds to open a business.

“I had forgotten about my bet and the following day as I prepared to go to work, I received a strange call informing me of my big win, at first I thought It was a prank but after the person on the other end of the line mentioned the Odibets midweek jackpot I jumped up and down with excitement,” he told journalists at the time.

And in February, Paul Karashia from Mai Mahiu also won Odibets’ Ksh20 million midweek jackpot. Having staked only Ksh20, Karashia correctly predicted the outcome of 13 games.
