The saga began after the Head of the Public Service Joseph Kinyua wrote to the KU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wainaina directing him to hand over a title deed to the land. The university led by Wainaina questioned the lack of negotiations.

In August 2021, the Auditor General Nancy Gathungu revealed that KU had dipped into a Ksh1.3 billion deficit in the year to 30th June 2021, forcing it to rely on short-term loans to finance its operations.
Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor, Paul Wainaina, revealed this when he recently raised concern over the low number of professors at the institution of higher learning, worried that it might affect the quality education and research.
