The Johos through their logistics company Autoports Freight Terminals have for the past two years enjoyed a monopoly in  handling cargo destined from South Sudan from Kenya, thanks to a lucrative contract signed with Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC).

Their Mombasa-based firm, Autoports Freight Terminals Limited, has over the years locked down a number of lucrative contracts putting them at the heart of regional trade in East Africa. Autoports is licensed to operate container freight stations (CFS) - warehouses where export and import shipments are consolidated or deconsolidated. 

The endorsement sets up a battle between Nassir and wealthy businessman Suleiman Shabhal who is also eyeing the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket for 2022. Shabhal ran against Joho for the seat on a Jubilee ticket in 2017 and lost, with ODM still the region's most popular party.

Raila asserted that if elected, his administration would focus on working to to open up new markets for Miraa including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The department of environment, waste management and energy in the county has said all waste handlers and vehicles will be registered afresh to help weed out illegal dumping.
