Media firms among top gainers at NSE

The Nairobi Securities Exchange opened the week yesterday with a total of 8.7 million shares valued at Ksh215 million traded, against 30 million shares valued at Ksh697 million posted on Friday.

Despite drop in the volume of shares traded, NSE indices, which measure performance of various counters, registered positive gains. The NSE 20 Share Index added 14.79 points to stand at 4007.55. The NSE 20-share is watched by many investors as it gives performance of the 20 blue-chip companies on the stock market.

All Share Index (NASI) picked up 1.41 points to stand at 166.61, an indication of an upward trend in the value and trading. The NSE 25 Share Index, on the other hand, inched up 22.44 points to stand at 4436.38.

The Banking Sector had shares worth Ksh66.7 million transacted and accounted for 30.95% of the day’s traded value. Equity Group Holdings moved 812,000 shares valued at Ksh34.9 million at between Ksh43.00 and Ksh43.25. NIC Bank down twenty-five cents to Ksh36.00 moved 440,000 shares worth Ksh15.9M. KCB Group moved 109,000 shares valued at Ksh4.8 million to close at Ksh44.25.

The Commercial & Services Sector had shares worth Ksh24.7M transacted and represented 11.48% of the day’s traded value. Nation Media Group traded 205,000 shares valued at Ksh23M at between Ksh112.00 and Ksh115.00.

The Energy & Petroleum Sector had shares worth Ksh9.4M transacted and represented 4.39% of the day’s traded value. KenGen moved 801,000 shares valued at Ksh7M at a fairly stable price of Ksh9.25.

The Insurance Sector had shares worth Ksh13M transacted and represented 6.24% of the day’s traded value. CIC Insurance had 1.2M shares valued at Ksh7.8M transacted at between Ksh6.10 and Ksh6.40.

The Investment Sector had shares worth Kes.35M transacted and represented 16.34% of the day’s traded value. Centum was the most traded counter in this sector with 806,000 shares valued at Ksh34.6 million changing hands at between Ksh42.00 and Ksh43.00.

The Manufacturing & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh27M transacted and represented 12.55% of the day’s traded value. E.A Breweries closed one shilling lower to Ksh268.00, moving 89,000 shares valued at Ksh24M

Safaricom was up fifty cents to Ksh24.75 moved 1.4M shares valued at Ksh36.9M.
