An image showing President William Ruto holding a club similar to the one used by the late retired President Daniel arap Moi is doctored.

The image shared by Twitter user Alinur Mohamed was shared at the height of anti-government protests organised by the opposition coalition, Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya.

In a sarcastic caption, Mohamed criticised the government for brutalising journalists who had gone to cover a court case against Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

I have seen video clips of Police officers beating journalists like burukenge for covering Babu Owino’s bail ruling at Milimani Law Courts. I assume these journalists were demonstrating, looting people’s property, blocking the road, and burning tyres. I congratulatulate the police for the good work they are doing to ensure we have peace in our country. Azimio should know that elections are over and allow President William Ruto to do his work. No Kenyan has complained about the high cost of living, high fuel prices, and the Finance Bill,” Mohamed captioned the photo.

An investigation by Business Today has found the image used in the Twitter post is a doctored image of the late Moi.

A reverse image search on Google shows that the original image was published by The Guardian in February 2020 following Moi’s death.

The original image was taken by Reuters’ photographer George Mulala, according to the caption on the story published by The Guardian.

The image published by Mohamed, therefore, is doctored.
