Meals app M-Kula ensured Kenya’s financial and technology firm Apptivate Africa soared to recognition during the Financial Inclusion Awards (Fini Awards 2019).
The app, which is a digital solution for meals in a setup between employers and employees, granted Apptivate Africa the Best Digital Feeding programme award.
In a statement, Apptivate Africa Corporate Relations Manager Irene Kioko dedicated the award to more than 300 food joints signed up on M-Kula in Kenya, clients and food lovers in the region.
“We have always taken a user-focused approach in building disruptive solutions for Africa. It was great to see out efforts recognised at such a prestigious stage,” Kioko said.
The firm developed M-Kula as a digital voucher that gives employers the opportunity to feed their teams without having to set up a canteen or deal with an outsourced caterer. Using digital vouchers, the app developers said that M-Kula makes employee feeding transparent and efficient by ensuring that employees have money for lunch throughout the month and that they use their lunch money specifically for food.
M-Kula in Kenya works by allowing employees to pick food joints where they can have their lunch and upon finishing their meal, they can request to pay via the app using the balance deposited by the employer.
Apptivate Kenya was formerly known as Sodexo Kenya, an offshoot of global benefits and rewards firm Sodexo based in France. It rebranded to Apptivate Africa in 2018 following a test run of its products.
Beyond M-Kula, Apptivate Africa also runs M-Tuza, a multi-store digital voucher.
