Athletics Kenya (AK) has pleaded to various county governments to include in their budgetary allocations, funds for athletics programmes especially championship events. Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nyeri, Taita Taveta and Nyandarua counties have in the past supported sports activities hence growth of talents in the areas.

According to AK Treasurer David Miano, the federation’s respective county offices have submitted their budgets to various county governments with the hope of securing funding this season.

Miano further noted that most of the counties will be staging their cross country championship this weekend to select teams for the Regional Cross County Championships planned for February 9. The regions will then select teams that will compete with other teams from other regions including Kenya Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Defence Forces and Kenya Universities, at the national cross country championships slated for February 23 at Eldoret Sports Club.

It is in the national championship that AK will choose a team that will represent Kenya in the world cross country championship to be held at Aarhus, Denmark from March 30th.

“After the Cross Country Championships we shall move to the relay and track and field season and we hope the county governments will lend us support,” said Miano adding that Counties should also bid to host the national championships after Uasin Gishu won the bid to host this year’s.

“It’s encouraging that there is now interest from other counties in hosting national events. It’s only through such partnerships with the county governments that we will realise credible success,” Miano said.
