A motion to rename a road in Nairobi’s Central Business District after the late BBI task-force Chairman Yusuf Haji is to be presented next week.
Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo urged the county executive to set in motion the plan to rename a road after the departed Senator
Citing Haji’s role as the chair of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce, distinctively appointed by the president, Guyo stated that renaming a road after him would be an appropriate tribute.
“His contribution towards the BBI report cannot go unnoticed, especially to the people of Nairobi and having a road in the city renamed after the late Senator will be a greater way to remember the great nobleman,” said Guyo.
Guyo asserted that Haji played a crucial role in putting an end to perennial tribal animosity every election cycle as well as dealing with issues of marginalization through the BBI Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2020.
The renaming of a road after a prominent changemaker is a three-step process. After a motion calling for the renaming of a road is passed by the assembly, the assembly’s implementation committee writes to the county executive communicating the approved motion.

With the road under the county government and not the national government as a prerequisite, the executive will, within three months, effect the change or reject it.
“The law requires that within three months of the approval of the motion, the motion should be effected or rejected,” said Minority Whip Peter Imwatok.
He then affirmed his full support for the motion and vowed to see through the identification of a road by the county executive within a week and immediately rename it after Haji, terming him as the “Father of BBI.”
This will not be the first renaming of a road in Nairobi. City hall has rechristened roads in honour of societal pioneers such as Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, Cardinal Maurice Otunga and Charles Rubia, among others.
In 2016, ex-governor Evans Kidero renamed Forest Road after the late Maathai in honour of her stand against environmental degradation.
The governor also renamed Cross Road in the CBD after multi-party politician Charles Rubia.
The road between City Hall Annex and Cardinal Otunga Plaza to Uhuru Highway was renamed Cardinal Otunga Road in honour of the catholic bishop.
Guyo described the late senator Yusuf Haji as a man of high standing in the society whose spirit of servant-leadership is admired not only by Nairobi leaders but by most politicians across the country.
