Former cabinet minister Rafael Tuju has asked Safaricom to block numbers registered under his name being used to defraud Kenyans.
In a statement on Friday, Tuju said a cartel of conmen have been swindling the public for several months, saying the fraudsters have so far collected over Ksh2 million in the fake M-Pesa accounts. He accused Safaricom and police of taking no action despite his reporting the matter previously.
“I have since reported all numbers concerned including, 0722930649 and 0787548123 to Safaricom and the police. These numbers remain active despite those reports,” Tuju said. “Safaricom has registered more members under the name Raphael Tuju with other ID card numbers, which makes it obvious that the cartel involved includes staff or agents of Safaricom.”
The former MP said he had received several complaints from members of the public on the same, especially after his father’s death in October. “In recent weeks following the death of my father, some of these conmen went into overdrive through fake Twitter, Facebook and Telephone accounts.”
“One victim lost Ksh120,000 to another fake line listed as 0728512540 belonging to a Joyce Omamo, who had masqueraded as my sister.”
Tuju clarified he owns only one Safaricom number and cautioned the public against sending money to anyone claiming to be him or his relative, because “I do not operate any M-pesa collection account”.
