Safaricom’s 30th million customer gets college sponsorship

Safaricom has announced that it will fulfill its 30th million customer’s ambition to join a leading technical institution in the country. Denis Muthii, aged 19 from Kimunye in Kirinyaga County, will see Safaricom fund his tuition and upkeep for a technical course in mechanical engineering.

Muthii says he bought a Safaricom line in Kerugoya town, shortly after completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education to always be in touch with his family. He says he chose Safaricom for the weekly offers.

“We are deeply humbled and honoured that Denis and more than 30 million customers have chosen Safaricom as their preferred service provider. The trust that our customers have put in us is an affirmation of our strategy of always placing our customer first and of providing them with relevant and affordably priced products. As a show of appreciation, we are glad to walk with Denis in his ambition to bring to life his passion to be a professional mechanical engineer,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Chief Customer Officer – Safaricom.

He has been working as a carpenter for the last two months before transitioning to a mechanic a week ago, joining his brother’s garage in Embu town.

In addition to the tuition funding, Muthii will also receive a mechanic toolkit, a year’s worth of All in One bundles at Ksh 10,000 per month, Ksh 10,000 worth of airtime per month for a year, and a Samsung Note 9, among other goodies.

“I chose to purchase a Safaricom line because I felt their weekly bundles aligned closely with my needs. In addition, their Okoa Jahazi service has been timely when I am short of credit, and I find their Customer Care Agents accessible and polite. I thank them for this recognition and for supporting me in my ambition to be a mechanical engineer,” he said.

Muthii joins more than 3,000 youth who are set to benefit from a separate Ksh 132 million Technical, Industrial, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TIVET) programme by the Safaricom Foundation.

Announced in February 2019, the programme will focus on entry-level training for four key areas within the construction industry specifically welding, plumbing and electrical engineering. The funds will be used for student’s fees, teacher training, setting up smart classrooms and construction of state of the art workshops.
