Profit and Loss Consulting Limited (P&L Consulting) emerged the winner of the Overall PR Campaign of the Year Award at this year’s Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) Awards for Excellence, held on 18th November.
The Overall PR Campaign of the Year Award recognizes one entry from all the winning categories that exhibits outstanding creativity in public relations as well as the campaign measurable outcomes and impact.
“The continued recognition in the industry is a significant step for our firm,” said P&L Consulting Managing Partner, Ms Mercy Randa, the former Daily Nation journalist who has been leading the company for a decade. “This reflects our capacity to deliver exceptional service to our clients who continue to believe in us. This, however, would not have been possible were it not for the team synergy, integrated capabilities and dedication.”
The campaign that scooped the top award was a cement industry public affairs assignment whose brief was to engage stakeholders and make a case for gradual upward adjustment on the import duty on clinker. There had been a proposal to raise it from the current 10% to 25%.
“An overnight adjustment would have hurt the industry and subsequently all consumers including government that’s doing large scale infra projects,” Ms Randa told Business Today in an interview after receiving the award.
The business advisory firm, which has established an offering of specialized communication, also picked up two additional awards for the Public Affairs Campaign of the Year and Crisís and Reputation Campaign of the Year categories, securing three awards during the PRSK awards for excellence gala.
The Public Affairs Campaign category recognizes the most effective use of PR to influence political and public opinion on a public interest issue. The firm secured this award, as it were, for its work in supporting cement manufacturers on making a case against the kneejerk increment of import duty on clinker from 10% to 25%.
The Crisís and Reputation Campaign award recognizes the most effective issues, crisís, or reputational management work by a communication team. The firm managed the revival of Mumias Sugar Limited, which was coming out of receivership. The award of the miller’s operation lease to a suitor had been contested publicly and through courts, creating a crisís that had put the revival in limbo.
The awards event, which was held in Mombasa, attracted 68 entries in the 15 categories including the Overall PR Campaign of the Year and the People Category Award. Established in 2000, PRSK recognizes and celebrates the outstanding achievements of public relations and communications practitioners.
The awards are open to members and non–members drawn from business enterprises, associations, private and government bodies, and students pursuing public relations studies. This year, the awards coincided with the organisation’s 50thanniversary.

P&L Consulting has in the past also been recognized for its excellence in the industry emerging winners for the best Financial Communication Campaign and best Corporate Publication in 2017 and 2019 at the PRSK awards as well as 1st runners up for best Financial Communication Campaign at the SABRE awards in 2018.
Scooping the highest prize on offer in the PSRK fraternity has hoisted P&L Consulting into the big league of PR in Kenya and sets it up to win bigger accounts in the ferociously competitive public and media relations industry in Kenya. It is a milestone considering that P&L Consulting is led by a lady who rose from the newsroom.
It’s a big deal for us
Ms Randa, who is a former business journalist with Nation Media Group, started P&L consulting in 2013 after leaving Africa Development Bank where she had communication oversight over 13 Eastern African countries. She has worked in other international PR firms. She has been managing partner since.
“We will be 10 years next year,” she said “In terms of achievements, I believe surviving three elections (2013, 2017 and 2022) and a pandémic (of two years) for a startup is a great achievement.”
Ms Randa says the three awards P&L has won this year, brings to six total awards it has picked since inception, literally an award every year since 2017, with exception of the pandémic years. “So coming back post-pandémic and winning overall campaign of the year is an additional achievement and a big deal for us,” she said.
