Orange launches high-speed internet

NAIROBI, Kenya


Orange Internet users will now be able to experience faster speeds on their e-mails, social media platforms and general browsing with the launch of Orange’s 42 Mbps network in Nairobi today. The launch, which comes almost a year since the launch of its 3G network into the Kenyan market, has also paved way for the unveil of the high speed 42 Mbps Orange Internet Everywhere modem.

“Our customers will now be able to enjoy faster speeds on our scalable network in Nairobi. We want our customers to get value for their money as they continue to enjoy Orange data services,” said Telkom Kenya CEO Mickael Ghossein. Ghossein added that Orange was continuously working on improving its data services and “scaling up of our network is part of our aggressive campaign of capturing the data market share, as we strive to maintain our strategy of being the best in data In Kenya. Already we have opened up our 3G network into Malindi and are looking into opening up the same in Eldoret and Nakuru.”

“We now have the best broadband infrastructure in the country. This has provided us with the platform to offer better data services on this network. Moreover, Orange will continue with its innovation trend and unveil products and services that meet our customers’ needs.”

The new Orange Internet Everywhere 42 Mbps modem will also automatically connect to 21 Mbps speeds while in a 3G coverage area or switch to EDGE if a user totally moves to a non 3G area, the new plug and play device is also compatible with varied Operating Systems,” explained Ghossein. Orange customers will be able to purchase already existing prepaid data bundles or the unlimited data offerings to top up this device.

The latest quarterly industry statistics released by industry regulator the Communications Commission of Kenya indicates that Internet penetration rose from 28.7 per cent recorded in the previous quarter to 30.0 per cent during the latest quarter under review. Compared with the previous quarter, Telkom Kenya is the only operator that recorded growth in the market share of 7.70 percentage points as other operators experienced reductions or minimal growth in the market share by subscription.

During the latest quarter review, broadband subscriptions increased tremendously to record 651,738 subscriptions up from 131,829 subscriptions posted the previous quarter. The 42 Mbps modem will retail at KSh9,999 and allows for faster internet on the go, will see users benefit from a friendly user interface and parental control features. Orange customers will also benefit from the usage of a free Orange email address.
