NSE trading slumps for the second day in a row

And Thursday followed Wednesday at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

Trading at the NSE closed on September 6 with 1,086 deals transacted, amounting to 13 million shares valued at Ksh409 million. The day’s transactions at the bourse were down from 14 million shares valued at Ksh498 million posted yesterday.

The first week of September had seen the NSE start the week well shy of the Ksh925 million that changed hands last Friday. After trading worth Ksh 448.5 million on Monday, the bourse bounced back on Tuesday to trade at Ksh701 million but slumped to Ksh498 million yesterday. The slide continued into Thursday with Ksh89 million lost in comparison to the previous day’s trading.

Indices also dropped as the NSE 20 share Index was down 23.40 points to stand at 3128.76. The All Share Index (NASI) shed 0.48 points to settle at 165.15 while the NSE 25 Share index lost 26.29 points to stand at 4,186.16.

The Bond Market however registered improvement with bonds worth Ksh2.2 billion transacted compared to Kes.1.7 billion on Wednesday.

Sectors Wrap

The Banking Sector had shares worth Ksh209 million transacted which accounted for 51.14% of the day’s traded value. Equity Group Holdings actively moved 1.9 million shares valued at Ksh88.7 million at between Ksh44.25 and Ksh45. KCB Group shares slipped by 2.25% to Ksh43.50 with shares worth Ksh63.8 million transacted. Diamond Trust Bank moved 235,000 shares worth Ksh44.2 million and closed at Ksh188.

Construction & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh9.6 million traded and accounted for 2.35% of the day’s turnover. Bamburi Cement exchanged 53,000 shares valued at Ksh9.6 million at between Ksh180 and Ksh181.

The Energy & Petroleum Sector had shares worth Ksh60.9 million traded and accounted for  14.9% of the day’s turnover. KenolKobil moved 3.5 million shares valued at Ksh57.8 million at between Ksh16.15 and Ksh16.25. KenGen down 1.53% to Ksh6.45 moved 286,000 shares valued at Ksh1.86 million.

In the Manufacturing & Allied Sector, shares worth Ksh4.6 million transacted which represented 1.13% of the day’s traded value. E.A Breweries traded 22,000 shares valued at Ksh4.4 million at between Ksh193 and Ksh195.

In Telecommunication, Safaricom was the day’s biggest mover with 4.1 million shares valued at Ksh116 million changing hands at between Ksh27.50 and Ksh28.50. This represented 28.33% of the day’s traded value.
