MALAWI – Twenty men in the Eastern region district of Mangochi have developed breasts after they shifted from taking the second provided type of Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) to the first ones, according to reports.

Mr Christopher Kandionamaso, Coordinator for Dignities International, one of the patients underwent an operation at Mangochi district hospital and denied reports that the development arose due to the drugs.

The District Health Officer (DHO for Mangochi Dr William Peno, said he was not 100 percent sure as to whether the breasts were protruding due to ARVs. “All patients on ARVs should continue taking them. We are not certain if the said patients case has come from the drugs” said Peno.

At the moment, the National Aids Commission has said that it will have to engage experts to check and analyse the situation subsequently denying to comment. However, some medical personnel believe the drugs had either expired or were fake.
