Guide to effective personal branding

We know the things that can get a Human Resource Manager to select you for a job. They believe you; 1) know how to do the job 2) will add value to the organization, and 3) will get along with others.

But what is your personal brand? Simply put, this is your reputation. There are some cases where personal brands fail.  This happens when they do not take into account the needs of the employer. The question that needs to be answered is, “Why should the organization hire you?” Not mentioning what you bring to the table is a way to lock yourself out of the job market.

Establish your brand

Once you have done this you can take a bit of time to review your approach to each job application so you are able to position yourself as a great solution to the needs of the organization.

Reinvent your brand

If you’re changing careers or leaving a long-time employer, you will want your brand to reflect where you want to go. If you’re not sure what your strengths or unique qualities are, search online for organizations that offer personality (tests) that will help you understand what you have to offer. You can also think back about the types of problems that people tend to bring to you because they’ve figured out that you’re the best person to solve them.

Building your brand

Yes, a personal brand takes work to be effective. But, when you’re job searching, that groundwork will actually save you time. So find opportunities to showcase your abilities, including participating in social media, write a blog, leading a committee for your local professional group, or volunteering for your favourite cause. These experiences will give you fresh narratives to demonstrate your value.

Things to avoid

Avoid being inconsistent by sending mixed messages. This may end up working against you. Define your thought patterns and opinions so that your brand is always consistent.

Lack of detail: If you are an expert about a topic, discuss it in detail. When you avoid questions or stick to the basics, you can give the impression that you actually don’t have the understanding and the experience required for someone in your field. Keep abreast of new things in your field.

Flying solo: If you are such an expert, why is your personal brand  unknown? To have credibility, you need to have other people in your field willing and able to testify to your competence. This is good for two reasons: it ensures that you don’t blow your own trumpet, which people will not believe.

Dishonesty: Lying about your knowledge, skills, or experience will not pay much in the way of rewards over time.

It takes time, so manage your brand well, avoid negativity and take time to manage your site or marketing activities. Show that you are constantly and consistently working on what you know best. All that is left is for you to start interacting in the social networks, self-advertising is not a good way to go. Let people know you.
