Former Kenya Sevens Rugby players Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba have been found guilty of gang-raping a Kenyan musician.

In a tweet, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) confirmed the verdict, adding that the two will be sentenced tomorrow.

“Nairobi court finds rugby players Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba guilty of gang rape and indecent act. To be sentenced tomorrow. The duo are accused of gang raping a woman last year as Seefa Apartments, Highrise, Nairobi,” ODPP tweeted.

The court had on July 12 issued a warrant of arrest against Mahaga after he failed to appear in court when the ruling had been scheduled to be delivered. Magistrate Mutuku was ready to deliver her verdict Thursday but the Kenya Harlequin player failed to show up.

This prompted the court to push the verdict to Friday afternoon during which session the prosecution applied for a warrant of arrest after Mahaga absconded for the second time. Mahaga and Wanyama were set free on a Sh500,000 cash bail each after denying the charge of gang-raping a rugby fan during her birthday party.

The court directed that the matter be mentioned on August 5 before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot as Mutuku is proceeding on her annual leave.

The duo have mantained their innocence ever since the act happened in February 2018. The former players said that the sexual act was consensual but the singer claimed otherwise. She said that she got pregnant from the act and did not know which of the two fathered her child.

In their statements, Wanyama and Olaba said that they knew the accuser and that they were together on the day she claimed she was sexually assaulted during her birthday on February 10, 2019.
