After a veil of silence on the whereabouts of the ‘solidarity account’ for teachers, opposition coalition CORD has finally released a progress report showing that Ksh1.5 million had been collected over the last two months and given to KUPPET and KNUT.
The CORD coalition leader Raila Odinga launched the initiative on September 23rd in a bid to support teachers who were striking then, but it certainly wasn’t successful as it was hyped. In fact, a day after the launch, reports showed a lukewarm response towards the initiative with only Ksh100,409 raised from the public through the mobile money account.

The initiative was hoping to replicate the success of past mobile-based fundraising campaigns. Kenyans in August raised Ksh6.1 million through mobile money to help Emmanuel Jadudi undergo a brain tumor surgery in India. Classic 105’s Maina Kageni recently raised about Ksh30 million in support of children with cancer at the Kenyatta National Hospital while recently, NTV’s Janet Kanini Ikua saw the support Kenyans during a concert aimed at raising funds to support her cancer treatment in India. The figures were not disclosed.
In comparison to other fundraisers, CORD’s initiative yielded a meagre amount. Lawyer James Orengo is reported to have confirmed that the money is with the teachers unions. Teachers have however resumed duty with the government pledging support. President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged TSC to pay teachers and the unions their September dues and called for a new CBA between the parties.
