Kenyan teacher Peter Mokaya Tabichi will have to wait ten years to get his hands on the entire Ksh100 million 2019 Global Teacher Prize money.

Mr Tabichi, a Mathematics and Physics teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, Pwani Village, Nakuru County was unveiled as winner of this year’s prize at a ceremony held in Dubai on Sunday evening.

The Global Teacher Varkey Foundation’s rules stipulate that the Ksh100 million prize money be wired to winners in Ksh10 million annual installments over ten years.

However there are conditions that Tabichi must adhere to before accessing the lump sum.

Mr Tabichi will be required to attend mandatory free of charge counseling sessions provided to winners by the foundation to enable them handle their wealth.

The Kenyan teacher will also be required to continue teaching or provide educational support to students between the ages of 5 and 18 in a school setting for a period of five years unless he retires.

He will be also required to serve as Global Ambassador for Varkey Foundation for the next five years.

The Varkey Foundation’s Ksh100 million Global Teacher Prize honors one exceptional teacher every year.

Tabichi was one of the 10 finalists and 1,000 applicants.

He was hounoured for his nobility and his desire to improve his local community. It has been revealed that Tabichi donates 80% of his salary to local community projects including education, sustainable agriculture and peace-building.

“He’s changed the lives of his students in many ways, including the introduction of science clubs and the promotion of peace between different ethnic groups and religions. He has also helped to address food insecurity among the wider community in the famine-prone Rift Valley,” reads the Varkey Foundation’s prize message.
