MOMBASA, Kenya
Star Times Media Kenya, a new digital pay TV company, has extended its signal to Mombasa, in a move to tag along with the imminent switch from analogue to digital television.
Speaking during the launch, the Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources Ramadhan Seif Kajembe , acknowledged the move saying that it will boost investors’ confidence in the region.
“The launch of Star Times in Mombasa signals continued investor confidence in this country and in this region in particular,” said the Changamwe lawmaker.
This comes barely three weeks after Star TImes launched its services in Nairobi and Kisumu. With plans to conquer major cities before the end of this year, the firm is also eyeing the rural market, popularly dominated by black and white TV sets.
The company is also set to employ 300 personnel and enlarge its reach to seven more major towns, the company is dedicated to providing a cheaper pay T.V station to the left out masses.
“Star Times will provide world class content at costs that are not only pocket friendly but also offer value for money,” said Star Times Chief Executive Officer, Mr Leo Lee. The company charges an initial fee of only 2,999KShs. Plus an affordable subscription rate from as low as 499KShs.
Already operational in China, it has also launched its operations in Guinea, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Central Africa and now Kenya.
With the world eyeing a shift to digital TV platforms by 2015, the cost of digital TV is still prohibitive, with some people being marginalized and lacking sensitization on how to partake the move.
