Two females were arrested yesterday in Narok town after the police seized 9 kilos of bhang with an estimated street value of Ksh288,000, the authorities said.

The hard drug, known for causing feelings of euphoria but anxiety, paranoia, and cognitive decline when excessively used, was found by police officers in a house in Fanaka village after they received information from members of the public and the two women, Elizabeth Angayo and Monica Pendo, will be charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

“The recovered substances that were packed in a green sack are kept as the exhibit as the suspects await to be arraigned in court,” Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia said.

The police were on massive illicit brews and drug operations in Narok County when they got the tip-off, and the County Commissioner said their arrest is part of the ongoing crackdown.

In the past week, the officers have conducted about 45 raids targeting vendors for the illegal sale of alcohol across the county in which over 2000 liters of illicit brew like changaa, kangara, and busaa, and 60 cartons of unaccustomed alcoholic drinks have been busted.

“We have arrested 180 people in connection to the illicit brewing and several bars closed. We are continuing with the operations with the aim of arresting those selling poisonous drinks to the public,” County Commissioner Lotiatia said. “The bars will be opened if the bar owners adhere to the rules and regulations laid down for operating such premises.”

Police said they also closed down 15 chemists and agro-vets that were operating without business permits, proper certification, or tax licenses, and health officials are to inspect them to determine if the products they sold meet the required standards.
