Moi university main campus students took to the streets today demanding beefing up of security at the institution following terror threats attributed to the Al shabaab militia group. According to the students, the university administration has not put in place more security despite several warnings from the group. Some students have been seen leaving the campus in fear of attacks.

Addressing the students the Vice Chancellor Prof Richard Mibey assured them that security had been tightened to counter any attack on the institution. “I want to assure you that we are safe,” he told the students. “Every effort is being done to ensure that the institution is safe. There is no need to panic. Enough armed security personnel are being deployed to ensure your security.”

Speaking during the demonstration, the students Governing Council Chairman Geoffery Omondi called for a security beef up by the government. “There is no second chance in life. Currently security for students is not an option, it is the only option,” he said. “Proper security detail should be deployed as fast as possible to avoid a repeat of what happened in Garrisa.”

According to information leaked to the public earlier last week, the group has vowed to attack the institution in a bid to ‘complete the task they started’ at Moi University’s Garrisa campus, where over 147 students lost their lives.
