Hay Group, a UK management consulting firm that works with leaders to transform strategy into reality, has ranked Procter &Gamble (P&G) as the best firm worldwide in developing strong, purposeful leaders. According to this year’s survey, the Best Companies for Leadership takes a determined and disciplined approach to help leaders develop and rise within their organisations.
P&G overcame stiff competition from General Electric and Coca-Cola, which were ranked second and third best-performing businesses for leadership out of the top 20 companies in the world. A key finding from this year’s study was that 80% of these top 20 companies had established clear career paths for their employees, compared to only 48% of all other companies.
Similarly, 80% of these companies were well ahead of their peer groups by providing career development experiences for their organisation’s highest potentials, ensuring the company has the right people with the right skills when needed to fill their most critical roles.
Ms Irene Mwathi, P&G communications manager, East Africa said the company takes a more proactive, structured approach to develop future leaders. “From an era of expecting leaders to take responsibility for their own learning, we recognise the importance of taking a more proactive and long-term approach to build their skills for the critical roles ahead,” she added.
The Best Companies for Leadership study identifies organisations with the best leadership practices and evaluates what can be learned from them. The study, initiated nine years ago, is the largest global research survey of its kind, with more than 17,000 individuals at 2,100 organisations participating, with responses from 115 countries.
