Mobile services firm, Orange, activated its third generation (3G) network in 14 urban centres across the country.

The high speed 3G network now covers Isiolo, Othaya, Kerugoya, Kenol, Mwingi, Loitokitok, Namanga, Mai Mahiu, Gilgil, Bomet, Eldama Ravine, Siaya, Webuye and Kilgoris. The 3G network offers users faster data transfer alongside using advanced technology multimedia services at reduced cost.

Orange targets 27 new urban centres this year, according to its CEO Vincent Lobry, who says the target is to cover the whole country. “Part of our KSh2.5 billion investment last year was dedicated to the rolling out of 3G network across the country, and the transformation of our operations to enhance service delivery,” Mr Lobry said.

Earlier, the Communications Commission of Kenya had rated orange’s 3G as the best in terms of quality ahead of the industry leaders Safaricom and Airtel, a factor that Mr Lobry says is a motivation to maintain and expand the quality to other new areas.
