Orange abandons old network

Orange has announced a switchover from its old wireless platform (CDMA) to Orange mobile (GSM network) after reviewing the viability of the wireless network. The shift will be completed by the end of March.

Code division multiple access (CDMA) allows transmitters to send information concurrently over a single communication channel and over the years it has been replaced by Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) which supports the 2G, 3G and 4G networks. According to the Orange CEO Vincent Lobry, the move will help the company cut down operational expenses while improving the quality of services it offers to the public.

“CDMA is fast becoming obsolete around the world and the maintenance of the same will not be a simple affair for any telecommunication industry in the mid and long term. This switch over will allow us to focus our strategic effort on the advancement of GSM technology in this market,” he says.

With the change over from the CDMA network, customers who enjoyed services via that platform will be able to retain CDMA numbers (020-XXXXXXX), onto a GSM SIM card. The affected CDMA (Orange Wireless) and EVDO (Modem) customers, will benefit from the company’s Device Subsidy Policy, to a range of vouchers; from Ksh500 to Ksh10,000 depending on their line consumption in 2014 and to an eligibility criterion.

“The amount that one is eligible to, will be discounted from any GSM product purchased from Orange shops. This device subsidy applies to all our prepaid voice and EVDO customers as well as our postpaid customers. In addition, our postpaid customers will be migrated in bulk by the end of March 2015,” notes Lobry.
