Moi and JKUAT to produce 1.2m laptops for schools

Moi and JKUAT have been contracted to produce 1.2 million laptops to be used for ICT teaching in primary schools. The programme is under the laptops for schools project of the Jubilee government.

Speaking at a pre-Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES2015) in Nairobi, Deputy President William Ruto revealed that Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and Moi University are currently working with international firms to deliver the laptops expected in 18 months’ time, reports Tuko.

He told the forum young people are becoming the focal point of development in the society, and challenged institutions of learning to offer meaningful education. “Our education must be affordable, accessible, relevant and of quality to meet the requirements of the market,” Ruto said.

Already, Ksh 17 billion in the 2015/16 budget has been allocated for the student laptop programme. The laptops will be primarily be used for computer labs for class four through eight students and developing digital content.

The programme will aim to support 1.2 million students in over 11,000 primary schools in accessing ICT education.
