JUNGLE ELEGANCE : Lupita Ny’ong’o enjoys a scenery in Kenya.

Hollywood star Lupita Nyong’o today recounted how she  was shocked to win the Oscar award last year.

“I never dreamt of winning the Oscar,” she said. “The feeling was very scary… It was scary to win with my first performance.”

Speaking at a breakfast briefing at the Villa Rosa Kempinski, Nairobi, Lupita blamed work commitments for the delay in coming to Kenya, saying her job requires her to be physically present.

Lupita, who is in the country to promote wildlife conservation, spoke on the damage poaching of elephants has done to the economy and Kenya’s wildlife, which is a major tourist attraction.

“My first connection with elephants started when I was 6 years old. It’s a lifelong passion… Talking about elephants, every 15 minutes an elephant is killed. We lose so much revenue as a country,” Lupita is quoted as saying by the Star.

The Oscar award winner challenged Kenyans not to buy pirated music and video productions which, she said, eat into the return of the organisations and individuals producing them.
