Nineteen students of St Mary’s Kibabii Boys High School in Bungoma have been sent home on suspicion that they are gay.

Nine students in form three were sent home on Friday while 10 from the form four class on Monday, the Star reports.  They are required to report back next week with their parents as the school management investigates, said Principal Mathew Namunwa.

Mr Namanuwa said there had been a debate the previous week on homosexuality, which led to divisions among students.  Some of those accused to be gay are suspected to have been doing it with form one students.

Mr Namunwa said since he joined the school last term, no such incident has been reported in the school.  He said after investigations, students found to be homosexual will be counseled.   “We all know this is a societal issue and we cannot pretend or run away from it but discuss it and find a way out,” Namunwa said.
