The High Court today ordered the release of Tony Gachoka from prison and suspended a Ksh2 million fine he had been ordered to pay pending hearing of an appeal case.
The orders served as a temporary reprieve to the businessman who spent the entire weekend behind bars after failing to raise the fine slapped on him alongside Jeff Koinange, talk show host, in a contempt of court case. Justice Weldon Korir suspended the Ksh2 million fine to give room for the hearing of an appeal case that Gachoka has filed at the High Court.
Principal Magistrate Maisy Chesang on Friday June 5 gave them two hours to raise the amount or be remanded in Industrial Area Prison. Jeff Koinange raised the amount and was released. Also slapped with the Ksh2 million was Standard Group’s – the owners of KTN – company secretary Carole Cheruiyot who was however released on a Ksh100,000 cash bail and given until Monday June 8 to raise the fine.
